While building Hailmary Terminal, the research dashboard we made ourselves, we learned a few things that apply to almost any data-heavy system. The full project story is on the case study page.

Lessons for other systems

  1. Start from user questions, not available data. Each section answers one question, like “what’s the market doing today?” or “what does this term mean?”.
  2. Data-heavy systems need explanation, not just charts. Numbers without context lead to misreading.
  3. Honest limits build trust. Stating what a system does not do matters as much as its features.
  4. Privacy can be an architecture decision. Keeping data on the user’s side removes many risks from the start.

The same principles apply to the reporting dashboards, internal systems, and portals we build for other businesses.
